What is educational neglect?
Educational neglect is often discussed by ed wonks in various forms. Sometimes the parents are blamed because they don’t get the kid into the building. Or sadly, kids who do graduate, but can’t read or write. Sometimes homeschoolers get swished into that swampland by media and/or public school types. I just posted this on Home Education Ma
Homeschool Anniversary
Recently a friend, who is interested in homeschooling through the middle school years, came by to talk about my homeschooling journey and what works and what definitely has not worked. Before I began sorting through the various curriculums and teaching strategies we (Miss Sam and I) experimented with and those that we have found success with, I gave her a piece of advice that was given to me when I first began this journey (has it really been over a year ago????). That advice was so thoughtfully

Cool Dad Homeschooling Moments…
Sorry for the blogging delay! It’s been a busy MOPS week…or I should say a busy week catching up on life after a busy MOPS week. Hopefully, I’m back in the groove. So, Dan brought home some temperature probes from work. They are one time use boxes that come with a chemical that must be kept above freezing. So there is a chart inside that records the temperature during the trip. When it arrives, Dan cracks open the case to see if the temp dipped below freezing. If it has, they return the chemi

What does homeschooling mean to you?
The Patriot News has a positive article on homeschooling which strives to dispel the myths about homeschool students being taught at home. As in isolated, secluded and lacking any interaction with anyone off the plantation. Nice to know that the existence of co-ops, field trips, proms and graduation ceremonies so elevates us in the eyes of the masses. There was one statement in the article which left me pondering, however. At one time, home schooling was looked at as not simply an alterna
Language Classes for Homeschoolers Forming in Northampton, MA
Nancy Foley of West Springfield, MA writes: I am homeschooling my daughter in West Springfield. I am looking for homeschool parents who might be interested in having their kids take foreign language classes at the International Language Institute in Northampton, MA. I have spoken with the school, and they would be interested in arranging a class if there is enough interest. It is an excellent school, currently offering classes only to adults. I took an intensive, weeklong Spanish class the
Field Trips and Teaching a Little Culture
We took a field trip yesterday, joining with several homeschool families from our area of Michigan. We first went to the Cheboygan Opera House to see a presentation of The Pied Piper of Hamelin , which a theater company from Detroit put on for young children. This play is colorful, musical, and just plain fun for the kids. It’s also the first theatrical presentation my youngest two, Ryan and Amanda, have ever seen live. Being up here in northern Michigan, we rarely get the opportunity to exp
GMCHE Conference

Here are a few highlights (if I tried to do a post on each thing, I’d never finish). 1. Regina Doman and her husband Andrew both spoke at the conference. Our family hosted them for the weeken

Maybe it’s something you would like to do, but just don’t know if it’s for you.
